Men’s tennis picks up road victory at San Diego State
The men’s tennis team recorded a 4-1 win on the road against San Diego State on Sunday in San Diego, Calif.
Utah State came out strong in the beginning during the doubles portion of the match. Senior Jaime Barajas along with freshman Jose Carvajal snatched the No. 1 spot with a 6-2 win against SDSU sophomores Armaud Restifo and Nicholas Mitchell. Senior Andrew Nakajima and freshman Valdemar Holm also posted a 6-2 win over freshman Jan Kirchoff and junior Raul de la Torre, taking the No. 2 spot.
Aggie freshmen Felipe Acosta and Addy Vashistha participated in the No. 5 spot against sophomore Rafael Gonzalez Almanzan and junior Sander Gjoels-Andersen, but the match ended unfinished due to results on the other courts.
Barajas dropped only two games in his 6-1, 6-1 win at the No.1 spot against Restifo. Sophomore Sergiu Bucur posted a straight-set victory as well, with 6-2, and 6-0 win, to put him above freshman Ignacio Martinez. Carvajal lost to Almazan with scores of 3-6 and 4-6. Holm was able to clinch the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot while against Kirchoff. All remaining matches ended unfinished.
The Aggies will be back in Logan for the team’s last two home matches of the season. Utah State will begin its home stand by hosting Nevada on Friday at 2 p.m. The final match at home will be on Sunday as USU will host Fresno State at noon.
