“We have a good shot,” said men’s volleyball club coach and member Greg Jorgenson of their chances at the conference championship.

This weekend the team will travel to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas to participate in their conference championship.

Twenty teams from the East, South and West divisions of the conference will participate, including teams from Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Washington and Nevada.

The teams will be divided Friday into pools of four. Seedings for Saturday’s double elimination tournament will be generated depending on the teams’ performance Friday. Utah State has a No. 1 seeding for pool play and is ranked fourth among the teams in the tournament.

The conference championship is primarily preparation for the national tournament, which will be held April 11-14, Jorgenson said. It’s also for bragging rights and consists of several grudge matches, she said.

One thing the team will have to deal with is working in a new setter. Jorgenson was the previous setter for the team, but he broke his finger in practice prior to Spring Break, though he expects to be back for nationals.

Jorgenson said he can play as long as his finger doesn’t get bumped, and he has been playing as a defensive specialist.

The team’s new setter played in the last tournament in Arizona, where the team took second. Jorgenson said their setter has plenty of experience and has been playing well.

Outside hitter Keith Croft said the team’s performance will depend on its setup, passing and serving.

The team stands a good chance in the tournament as long as it performs well Friday and gets a good seed going into Saturday, Jorgenson said.

“We’ll be right up there, vying for the title,” Croft said.
