Men’s volleyball takes 2nd and 4th at UVSC tourney
The Utah State men’s volleyball club took second among college teams and fourth overall at Utah Valley State College this weekend.
Friday, the team traveled to UVSC in Orem to play in its second tournament of the semester. Play on Friday consisted of pool play to determine the brackets for double elimination on Saturday. USU played Weber State University, UVSC B-team, UVSC and the University of Utah on Friday.
The games against Weber State and UVSC B-team resulted in victories, but the games against UVSC and Utah did not go as well.
“We didn’t play too hot,” said team member Greg Jorgenson. USU lost to both UVSC and Utah, placing third of five in pool play.
Saturda, USU played Ricks College, Utah, two BYU alumni teams and one Salt Lake City club team. USU won against Ricks, Utah and the Salt Lake City club team but lost to both BYU alumni teams.
Saturday’s victories placed Utah State fourth overall for the tournament behind UVSC and the two BYU alumni teams. Among college teams, USU was second behind UVSC.
“We are getting better. We had a little bit of gelling on Saturday,” said Jorgenson. “The new guys are really starting to fit.”
Utah State is playing with two new outside hitters after losing two players at the end of last semester.
The UVSC tournament is unusual in that it was not an official conference tournament. The next tournament USU will compete in will be at the University of Utah Feb. 23 and 24.
The team was planning to schedule a home game for next weekend, but a lot of the team is playing through injuries, Jorgenson said. As far as upcoming games, the team will play at Weber State University in March and will probably have a home game at the end of March.
