Men’s volleyball wants to play in Spectrum

Club teams at any school are usually at the bottom of the priority list. The Utah State men’s volleyball club is no different. It is, however, trying for something big this year. The team is negotiating to play some of its home games in the Spectrum.

There are no openings in the Spectrum’s schedule for the volleyball team to play. The men’s basketball team obviously has priority over every other organization. There are also women’s gymnastics and women’s basketball (also a club team), both of which have time scheduled for games. Even visiting basketball teams get time in the Spectrum to practice.

Why couldn’t visiting teams practice in the HPER building so the volleyball team can get in the Spectrum?

Volleyball team captain Greg Jorgenson said that if the team gets the chance to play in the Spectrum, the cost of admission would only be a few dollars, but for fundraising purposes only. The Spectrum would attract more fans than the HPER and would make more money for the team, Jorgenson explained.

“Playing in the Spectrum would do a lot for us,” Jorgenson said. “It would be a good venue for us to draw a crowd. All of the players would love to play in front of friends and family. We could also draw from the women’s [volleyball team] success.”

When asked if he thought the team could pull it off, Jorgenson replied, “I am going to stay optimistic about it.”
