Museum of arts hosts “Wind Pieces”

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, located on the campus of Utah State University, Logan, announces the exhibition of 13 new sculptures by Frank Riggs. The exhibition, “Wind Pieces: New Sculpture,” was organized by the museum and features works selected from Riggs’ most recent body of work inspired by the seascape of his youth in Gloucester, Mass.

“The works capture the ease and freedom of being on the water, with ropes banging in the wind and water lapping along side,” Riggs said of his recent work. “I needed something to push me a little harder. Each piece is improvised and built as it progresses. They are not planned. Each old block of wood has been transformed.”

“Wind Pieces” is on exhibit June 19 to Aug. 26. An artist talk and reception is Tuesday June 20, at 7 p.m. at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

“These new pieces, combined with several transitional pieces, are an important contribution to the legacy that Frank has left through his artwork” said Nadra Haffar, the museum’s education curator.

Riggs credits the discovery of his artistic gift through a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He pursued a career in industrial design, graduating from Pratt Institute. Lured by furniture designer Milo Baughman, Riggs established the environmental design department and taught for BYU in the 1970s and ’80s. He eventually turned to sculpture as his main mode of expression. His work can be found extensively throughout the United States.

Riggs’ earlier geometric work was described by writer Terri Draper in a 1994 “St. George Magazine” article.

“Frank Riggs’ work allows the viewer to see the world differently – as he does – in clean lines, classic shapes and the way they interact,” Draper said.
