New activities planned for annual ag week
In celebration of Utah State University’s agricultural program, the annual Ag Week begins today with additional activities unique from years past.
Throughout the entire week until Sept. 30, students are invited to attend over 10 different activities on campus.
“The goal of Ag Week is to promote participation of agriculture students as well as university students,” Cody Bingham, ASUSU Agriculture senator, said. “It’s a tradition to promote the founding of this college.”
This year, the College of Agriculture is sponsoring its first 5K run Thursday called “Tour de Campus.” The route of the race will run throughout USU’s campus.
The college decided to add this activity to involve the public health and nutrition science students, said Bingham.
“First we want to educate those within the college about the diversity of the college and secondly we try to do fun activities. A lot of students haven’t had a lot of experience with the ag program,” Chad Warnick, a senior majoring in agriculture education who is heavily involved with the week’s activities, said.
Other activities will include a rodeo today and tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cache County Fairgrounds and an Ag Day barbecue tomorrow to raise scholarship funds for the College of Agriculture.
On Tuesday, there will be a keynote speaker discussing the new food pyramid that the United States Department of Agriculture released this summer.
There are over 1,000 agriculture students at USU, many of which take pride in being Utah’s agricultural school.
“[USU] is Utah’s only land-grant university,” said Bingham. “That’s one thing that ‘s very unique about us.”
Warnick said he enjoys all of his agriculture classes because they are hands-on and are not only a “philosophy, but an application.”
