Newest Miss Logan named
The new Miss Logan, Meredith Brown, has begun her reign.
Competition for the title started in January, when she sent in an application, essay and picture. Brown said after that, she forgot all about it. So, when the letter came, telling her she ranked first in the city and among the top 10 in the state, she was surprised.
But her new accomplishment was warranted. Brown, who is originally from Lancaster, Ohio, said she has done community work with abused women and children and performed in the Children’s New York Metropolitan Opera.
In addition to keeping a high grade point average as a sophomore studying English education, Brown said she substitute teaches to gain experience. She plans on getting a master’s degree in administration.
The thought of entering a beauty pageant concerned Brown, who has always considered herself to be a feminist. But she found that the competition isn’t just about a pretty face, she said. The leadership experiences that come with the Miss Logan title will help Brown with her plans for the future, she said. Her responsibilities as a leader include working with the mayor, appearing in parades and implementing her own ideas.
“I can do as much as I want to or as little, but I plan on doing as much,” Brown said.
After catching a glimpse of Utah’s potential through the Olympics, promoting unity has become the primary component of her platform, she said. Brown plans to take her platform to the competitions for Miss Utah, Miss West Coast and Miss Junior America this August in Anaheim, Calif.
Participants there will model evening and casual wear, speak on world issues and compete to be the most photogenic. She was relieved to learn there will not be a swimsuit competition, Brown said.
The talent portion of the competition – in which Brown plans to sing – will be the most exciting, she said. However, she is nervous to be compared to the other girls.
“There are tons of pretty, talented, smart girls out there who could be Miss Junior America,” Brown said.
Whatever the outcome, she is proud to have the opportunity to represent Logan.
Michele Brown, mother of the new Miss Logan, is proud, too.
“I support her 100 percent,” she said.
Her daughter has always been active in her community, Michele said. She cares about people and jumps at the chance to aid in a good cause.
Meredith takes very seriously the fact she represents Utah State University, as well as Logan, Michele said.
“I think this is going to be a great experience for her,” she said.
Miss Logan said she is excited for the road ahead and “ready to meet the challenge.”
