NEWS NOW: Parking conflict may displace marching band

Space conflict between USU’s football team and marching band may result in the band finding a practice location closer to campus.

At an Executive Council meeting Tuesday morning, ASUSU President Christian Thrapp reported football players coming to their own practice park in the band’s practice space in the parking lot at Romney Stadium.

Athletics Vice President Karson Kalian said heavy construction near the lot and parking for those involved with intramurals are also part of the space problem.

Intramural athletes and the band both need the area in the afternoon, Kalian said.

The area is already crowded due to the nearby bus stop, and if the band were relocated it would free up 120 to 150 new spaces for people to park in. Thrapp said.

For now, Thrapp said James Morales, vice presid
ent for Student Services, has suggested the band practice on the tower fields. The fields would have temporary lines painted similar to the parking lot. Despite this, a permanent solution is yet to be found, he said.

“Dr. Morales has given all power to the executive council,” Thrapp said.

He and and the rest of the council will vote on a decision after hearing from Kevin Kobe, director of Campus Recreation, next week.
