Officer involved in Lauren McCluskey case fired from Logan PD

The Logan Police Department has fired Officer Miguel Deras after the department concluded that he showed off compromising photos of former University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey.

Deras, who was assigned to McCluskey’s case in October 2018, joined the Logan police force in September 2019.

On Wednesday, Logan police released a statement saying they received information that the Utah Department of Public Safety would be releasing their findings concerning the McCluskey case. The department said they would need some time to review the case in its entirety.

According to the findings from department of public safety’s internal investigation, there is no physical evidence to show that Deras ever had the pictures on his phone. There is also no evidence to suggest he forwarded the image to anyone other than another detective assigned to the case.

However, several officers, whose names were redacted in the report, said they overheard Deras bragging that he “could look at the pictures whenever he wanted.” These officers also said they looked at the photos and “inappropriate” comments were made. One officer admitted to making a crass comment about McCluskey’s explicit photo.

Attorneys representing Deras released their own statement.

“This report directly falsifies virtually every aspect of the Tribune’s original reporting and roundly corroborates Officer Deras’ account of events as released on May 19, 2020,” Deras’ attorneys said.

The Logan Police Department will not be commenting any further on the investigation, according to the press release.
