OUR VIEW: Delete yer e-mail ya filthy scoundrel
It has been hard not to complain about WebMail speeds during the past month. Many four-letter words have been used when trying to access new messages but not getting anything but a reminder that WebMail is in “maintenance mode.”
Help appears to be on the way, however, and the solution is no farther than each student’s own mouse.
Some students have as many as 50,000 e-mails sitting in the inbox of their CC account. Each time someone tries to access their own account, the server becomes bogged down while searching and scanning through those thousands of messages.
Why does anyone have a need for 50,000 messages in their account?
It is hard to understand why some students retain sentimental value over a three-year-old e-mail from their mothers asking them to stop and get a gallon of milk on their way home for the weekend, but they apparently do value these messages.
Open your e-mail, read your messages, then delete them or download them to your computer. It might seem like there is a reason to retain every e-mail message for months, but students should ask themselves when was the last time they scrolled through all their old messages in search of one particular e-mail they needed.
The answer to that question would most always be “never.”
Are the long waits for WebMail to load worth it just to save a few messages from an old lover?
We e-mailed ourselves the answer, but WebMail is still loading.
