OUR VIEW: Don’t turn backs on men’s basketball

It’s amazing what a little bit of success will do to some people. One need look no further than the Utah State men’s basketball team.

What was a team that struggled to win half of its games in the late ’80s and early ’90s, has been one of the winningest programs in the country the past four years.

Despite losing their last two games, the Aggies are only one win away from doing something they’ve never done — win at least 20 games in four straight seasons.

And yet fans of Utah State basketball are growing restless. It’s pretty easy to see what success breeds. This is what almost every coach in a major professional sport experiences on a yearly basis.

Since when has a 19-8 record been something to be ashamed of? True, the Aggies have dropped back-to-back games against teams everyone felt they should have beat, but it doesn’t mean the season has been a disappointment.

With that in mind, don’t give up on the Aggies, and their quest to make it to the Big West Conference Championship game for the fourth year in a row.

USU is still very capable of winning the tournament. This is an Aggie team that beat Utah and Weber State, two of the hottest teams in the country, for heaven’s sake.

It’s not like any team in the BWC is invincible. This was very evident the past two weeks as UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara — the league’s top two teams — have been blown out.

So show some Aggie pride by supporting the team in its last two home games. After all, Aggie fans have to admit they’ve been a bit spoiled.
