OUR VIEW: Flip Flop Friday is hypocritical

Friday, the College Republicans are promoting an opportunity for Utah State University students to express their political opinions in the form of Flip Flop Friday.

Students who believe presidential candidate John Kerry is guilty of flip-flopping will be afforded the opportunity to share their opinions by wearing flip flop footwear – a relatively common and popular choice among USU students.

Yet, when the Pride! Alliance promoted Blue Jeans Day – a day when supporters of gay marriage were asked to wear blue jeans – in February, conservative factions, including the College Republicans, were up in arms.

Apparently the College Republicans have changed the stand and policy on how acceptable a practice it is to use common clothing to support or protest a cause.

Some might even say they’ve flip-flopped.

The College Republicans have turned 180 degrees and taken a hypocritical approach on this issue. Flip Flop Friday, with the exception of some alliteration, is no different than Blue Jean Day.

Furthermore, this demonstration is, at best, a petty distraction from the serious issues involved in a presidential election.

While the actions of the College Republicans may be intentional, hypocrisy, no matter how intential, is still hypocrisy.

Would the College Republicans prefer to the play the role of the pot or the kettle in this one?
