OUR VIEW: Fly those American flags the right way

Our American flag is a beacon of freedom that symbolizes everything this nation is about. Unfortunately, Utah State University’s American flag is being hidden among the darkened night sky of Old Main Hill.

The flag is flown high above the city of Logan every night, but that doesn’t matter because no one can see it.

A flag can only be flown at night if it is illuminated properly according to flag etiquette. Although an attempt is being made to light the flag with the four spotlights at the base of the flagpole, they hardly serve their purpose. The light barely reaches the top to dimly illuminate our nation’s symbol.

The lights from the “A” overpower the view of Old Main Hill from onlookers below. Some students do not even know a flag is there.

Instead of attempting to just meet the requirements of flag etiquette, an effort should be made to light the flag enough so it is one of the first objects a person sees when approaching the university.

Other flags not lit are located at Edith Bowen Laboratory School and the Military Science Building.

The patriotism the American flag portrays is no less important than Aggie pride emanating from the “A” atop the same hill, so let’s make it that way.
