OUR VIEW: Grad luck has been more than earned

Congratulations, you’re going to graduate.

You just won the lottery (even though you didn’t buy a ticket), found seven rabbit feet wrapped in four-leaf clovers, and bumped into a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with a genie waiting inside to grant your wishes.

In other words, it’s your lucky day.

OK, so maybe passing freshman biology and English 2010 required a good deal more sweat, perseverance, and (maybe) luck than merely hitting the jackpot.

But don’t let that stop you from celebrating – you’ve earned your degree, emphasis on earned.

For the next little while, you’re going to hear a lot of advice from a lot of people. Uncle Mortimer and Cousin Penelope are going to tell you where you should move. Your good buddy next door will tell you he knows someone who is related to someone who works for someone who may have a job available for a recent graduate. And Dr. Seuss will tell you about the places you’ll go with your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet.

Out in the wild, wild world, that piece of paper with your name in fancy writing also means something else: an education which many people on this planet were not so fortunate to have the chance to receive.

Here’s one more piece of advice: Find a way to use your education to make the world a better place. It also won’t hurt to find something you can enjoy doing.

One last thing – Good luck!
