OUR VIEW: Join the club, get involved at USU

For many students at Utah State University, it’s hard to believe the semester is almost three weeks old. Adjusting to a new slate of classes hasn’t been that difficult, and having roommates around again is a good thing.

But what about those students who are freshmen and might feel a little bit lost? The fact is, making the adjustment to college life can be a difficult one, and an overwhelming one.

Living away from home for the first time, taking classes that swamp the mind, and doing things outside one’s comfort zone are just a few of the challenges that await first-year students.

Fortunately, there are many things students can do to fit in and make their college experience more enjoyable. One way a student can get involved is by becoming a member of one of USU’s clubs or organizations.

There are more than 200 clubs and organizations a student can pick from. And finding out about these clubs is simple. All one has to do is get on the USU Web site, click on the index icon, and select the clubs and organizations icon.

Whether one is interested in joining a sports club, getting involved in a service organization or joining an ethnic/cultural club, becoming a member of a club is an excellent way to make friends and meet like-minded people.

It’s also a great way to expand one’s horizons and help one escape his comfort zone — which is one thing attending college is all about. Some organizations even look great on résumés.

So find a way to get involved. College life is supposed to be a great experience. However, it’s entirely up to us to make it the great experience it should be.
