OUR VIEW: New council will benefit Logan
The votes have been cast, the polls have closed and the ballots have been counted. Logan residents have selected three representatives to serve the city for the next four years.
Based on the campaigns the winning candidates ran, it appears as if Logan will continue to be in good hands.
Laraine Swenson, Steven Taylor and Joseph Needham all have promised to devote a large portion of their time to making Logan a better place. They have all pledged a commitment to the city and Loganites have pledged their vote of confidence in return.
While for Swenson, Taylor and Needham getting the approving nod of residents is a good thing, the low voter turnout in the election is not.
About 4 percent of voters in student-populated districts went to the polls.
Residents are given the opportunity each year to elect representatives they feel comfortable with. When the majority of registered voters don’t take advantage of their voting rights, their rights to complain about any unpopular decisions made by lawmakers goes out the window.
Swenson has demonstrated a desire to help downtown Logan and commit to helping the city, Taylor has said his past experiences will go a long way to being effective on the council and Needham has shown he has the fiscal responsibility to make a great council member.
For the minority of Logan residents who voted Tuesday, their voice has been heard. For the majority who didn’t vote, shame on you.
We congratulate the new Logan City council members and wish them the best of luck in their new terms.
