OUR VIEW: Respect for diversity begins at the university level
In the beginning of the year, somebody scratched one of the Miss International photos on the wall in the hallway between the Statesman Newsroom and the International Students office on the third floor of the Taggart Student Center.
No one knows who did it or when exactly it happened. That’s beside the point. The fact is that it happened. Why?
Utah State University is a university that supports and encourages diversity and unity. Recruiters actively seek out students from diverse cultural backgrounds. The university also encourages diversity through forums and various campus organizations and clubs.
Those who don’t choose to attend the events or join the organizations should still respect and support them. Students may choose not to take advantage of the diversity at USU by attending the Miss International Pageant, the Luau or the Robins Awards, but actions disrespecting those who do take part in these activities are inexcusable.
Respect other cultures. Respect other groups. Respect Utah State University’s clubs and organizations.
Respect is not only learned but practiced. It starts in the institutions and carries on into society.
