Our View: Student Freedom Press Day

Feb. 26 is Student Press Freedom Day, and to celebrate the student journalist within USU and the greater campus community, the editorial board encourages Utah State University students to reflect on what it means to have a free press fostered through education. The Utah Statesman is proud to be an organization independent of the university that strives to report ethically on the campus community. Every day, we see our student journalists at The Utah Statesman show up and write because it’s what our community needs and they have a passion for spreading information. This is what it means to be the student voice on campus.

Journalism is a crucial component of democracy that provides the public with accessible information and upholds accountability within leadership at all levels. The press helps give a voice to communities and when done correctly, can fight the spread of misinformation. It takes not only journalists, but also students, educators and community members to advocate for freedom of the press. Conversations surrounding student journalism can strengthen the field, which is in need of protection and public support.

Support student journalists in the community, even in small ways, by learning more about freedom of the press and exploring your local district’s unique policies. In the true spirit of journalism, spreading the word can be extremely beneficial to the cause. Write an opinion column for your local newspapers, post about student journalism on social media or find a meaningful way to engage with USU Student Media.
