OUR VIEW: Take part in USU’s cultural activities

A higher education is more than just a degree.

At Utah State University, students are often challenged to make the most of their educational experience by not only attending classes, but by attending the many cultural events provided by organizations such as the Utah State Theater, the Ellen Eccles Theater and the Associated Students of Utah State University Arts and Lectures committee.

And, the best part is that these events are made available for little or no charge.

Three or four times each semester, UST performs quality productions of many of the most important plays in contemporary theater. Already this year, they’ve brought the internationally acclaimed SITI company and produced “The Laramie Project,” one of the most performed plays in the country.

For a fraction of the price students could expect to pay in larger cities, the Ellen Eccles Theater brings in spectacular international dancing troupes, musicals and performers. So far this semester, Ballet West and Grammy award-winning vocal group Chanticleer have visited the valley.

With the many excellent guest speakers and performing groups brought by the Associated Students of Utah State University, students are given a chance to expand their horizons and prepare for a world which grants success to those with a broad cultural understanding.

Goethe once said a person should, every day at least, “hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture and, if it were possible, speak a few reasonable words.”

Reasonable words are developed, at least in part, through a refined culture.

Culture is knowledge and, as G.I. Joe so often reminded us, knowing is half the battle.
