OUR VIEW: Taking advantage of alternative book options

Finally, there are a few more choices for students. For years, college students have complained about the overpriced textbooks offered at most university book stores. These campus monopolies have been gouging students’ pockets for every last penny.

Luckily, there are now a few alternatives and, although other retailers may not be as convenient as one located right in the middle of campus, at least students are now able to do a little comparison shopping and maybe even keep some extra money in their bank accounts.

Who is at fault for the high textbook prices? If you ask the university bookstore they will tell you it is the greedy authors and professors who write the books. But, the writers and publishers will put the blame back on the markups when the book reaches the shelf. Regardless of who is responsible, there are finally ways around the prices.

We suggest checking online distributors such as bigwords.com and amazon.com to find competitive prices. There are also local companies near campus that might carry lower-priced books. The Associated Students of Utah State University also has an online book exchange for students to swap and barter with their old books.

With all these choices, it is in all students’ best interest to compare their options and decide which is best for them. Sometimes the best may be found right on campus, but don’t be afraid to look around.
