OUR VIEW: Team spirit should not become mean-spirited

Coaches and players around the country know the Spectrum as a wild and rowdy place to play. Our fans are infamous for getting behind our Aggies in a way not seen in many schools.

Consistently game after game, fans can get in the opposing team’s heads with chants of “airball” or just plain making noise when USU is on defense.

But when does school spirit turn into mean spirited?

At the La-Tech game a fan was ejected from the area for supposedly excessively heckling the refs. The officials at games are professionals doing their job.

If the kids at Subway put more mayo on a sandwich than you felt was necessary, you wouldn’t get up in their face would you? Remember that next time a call doesn’t go the Aggies’ way.

We understand that the referees do make mistakes and that tempers do run high. It’s human nature to get worked up about a big game.

We also appreciate that vast majority of USU fans who show up, show them our A game – and still showing some class.

Being an Aggie fan is one of the best parts of attending school here. The unity we feel makes us all part of the same team.

Just don’t let this team mentality turn into a mob mentality.
