OUR VIEW: USU offers opportunities for diverse experience

If you spend much time reading the opinion page you’ll see a lot of the same issues raised year after year. This is only natural. Issues like tuition, parking and activities have always affected students and always will.

However, every once in a while, an issue arises out of ignorance or misunderstanding. One such complaint heard too many times is “USU doesn’t offer enough opportunities for diversity.”

This accusation seems quickly made and is way off base.

USU is home to many international and multicultural clubs and organizations. These groups are constantly putting on wonderful and educational activities to share their cultures with the rest of the student body.

If you want to have a diverse experience at USU, go to these events. Talk to the members of the various clubs. Most are more than willing to let you join, even if you share and different cultural background.

Compared to the rest of the valley, our campus is a wonderfully diverse place with students and faculty from all other the world. Making friends with anyone new can be hard, especially when you don’t share and common background or even native language. Don’t let that stop you. Go beyond your comfort zone to reach out and meet someone from somewhere else. Chances are you’ll discover that the differences were largely in your head.

This week is Hispanic Heritage Week, in which the Hispanic Student Union will make an effort to teach everyone about their cultures. Let’s make the effort of going to learn.

If you don’t want to attend the events, that’s fine and it is your right. Just don’t complain about not getting the chance to.

Granted, Logan will never be a multicultural hub of the world like New York or Los Angeles and if that’s what you’re expecting that you will be disappointed. Despite this it can still offer chances for everyone to experience a little taste of many pieces that make up our world.
