Our View: USUSA Elections 2026
In reflection of last year’s USUSA Elections cycle, The Utah Statesman once again implores more students to run for a USUSA position. There are positions that cover every corner of campus, including statewide, meaning almost every USU student has a position they could possibly be interested in or eligible to run for.
When USUSA positions go unopposed in the elections cycle, a student gains a substantial scholarship simply for declaring, and the privilege of choice the greater student body has when it comes to their representation is removed.
Last elections cycle, both the clubs and organizations executive director and the athletics and campus recreation executive director ran unopposed for their positions.
Months later, one of these officers was then tried before a hearing board for various violations of their position description. If there were opposing candidates to these positions in the last elections cycle, the officers would not only be motivated to take their heavily scholarshipped positions more seriously but also then put in effort to be better qualified for a leadership role that upholds USUSA standards.
As a board, we hope students, especially after the two hearing board meetings in the fall semester, will see a need for more voices in student leadership here at USU and decide to run for office.
The board acknowledges the hard work all members of USUSA put into their positions for the all-encompassing betterment of USU. We hope other students recognize the hard work of our student leadership and that they feel inspired to be apart of something bigger than themselves on campus, such as USUSA.
