OUR VIEW: USU/SA minds too much on the field, not enough in office

The USU Student Association officers are elected by students. They handle our fees and receive stipends and scholarships. They deal with concerns of utmost importance to students and should be held to the highest expectations. But those expectations weren’t necessarily met last week.

Directors from Parking and Transportation Services and Housing and Dining Services presented to the executive council last week. They claimed they needed to change parking on campus because of the new buildings being erected, specifically the new Aggie Life and Wellness Center. They echoed the need for changes in parking because spots were being taken up from the ALWC and the Wayne Estes Center.

One of the proposed solutions was to make the Big Blue Terrace 24 hours instead of opening the arms at 10:30 p.m. Several other reasonable solutions were presented, but never discussed.

Parking is one of the main concerns of students. We wrestle with it for our entire college career. The executive council needs to be invested in an issue that is so concerning to the student body.

But when Parking and Transportation made their presentation, there were a total of two questions – clarifying questions. That time should have been used to question the directors about potential jobs lost, increased fees and impact on students. The council was rushed that night to make it to a flag football game on time. Consequently, the parking demonstration lasted about 10 to 15 minutes and there was minimal discussion among the officers.

Way to go with meeting expectations, USU/SA.
