OUR VIEW:We blame U – and U, and U, and U

We’re not worried about Utah Valley University. Well, we are a little, but not that much.

We are, however, very concerned about UVU.

There is a obvious problem here.

Let’s take a quick roll call of all the institutions of higher learning within the Beehive State and shall we?

There’s USU (2). Naturally this is OK. Not only are we the coolest university around but every state as a _SU. It’s unfortunate Utah starts with a U too but we can deal with that.

There’s U of U (4) Once again, every state has a U of _.

Of course there’s BYU. (5) For once, BYU is not the problem. It’s hard to avoid at least one U.

And SUU, can’t forget that one (7). Seven ‘Us’ in four schools – this is racking up quickly.

There’s even a WSU (10) Yes, a ‘W’ counts as 2 ‘Us.’

Now we’re adding UVU into the mix. Wow, that is a lot ‘U’s,’ people. Too many in fact.

Did no one consider this? They had a chance to come up with a totally new name for the school, with the change to university status and they blew it.

There are 26 wonderful letters in the alphabet; they should have looked into using a couple of them. Nothing against the letter ‘U’ of course – we’re quite fond of it ourselves – but we also like ‘J,’ ‘R’ and ‘F.’

Not every school has to be named after the state it’s in. There is nothing wrong with naming a school after a city or a person.

College life is complicated enough without turning a list of our in-state rivals into a tongue twister.
