Outdoor track and field season kicks off
Utah State’s outdoor track and field program opens up this weekend at the UC Irvine-hosted Spring Break Classic on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17.
Action begins at 3 p.m. on Friday with both the men’s and women’s hammer throw, while track events kick off at 7 p.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Events for the day will conclude at 8:05 p.m. with the men’s 5,000-meter run.
Saturday events begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s and women’s pole vault, with track events starting at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay. The day will end with the men’s 4x400m relay at 5:10 p.m.
Last season, the Aggies sent 18 athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary Championships before sending four to the Outdoor National Championships. The four sent to the championships last year included returning student-athletes senior Clay Lambourne and junior Brenn Flint.
While at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, the men’s side earned third with a total of 133 points, while the women took eighth with a tally of 42.50 points.
During the Mountain West Championships, four event titles were claimed by USU. One of those titles was earned by sophomore javelin thrower Sindri Gudmundsson, who holds the school record in the javelin throw and went on to become a javelin All-American last season. Another title was earned by senior David Hirschmann in the discus event.
Fresno State will be hosting the Mountain West Outdoor Championships this year, taking place Wednesday, May 9, through Saturday, May 12. Two weeks later, The NCAA West Preliminaries will be held in Sacramento, California. From there, competition will progress onward to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships held in Eugene, Ore., from June 6-9.
