Preview: Aggies host Gonzaga this weekend as part of five-match homestand
After spending four of their first five matches of the season in enemy territory, the Utah State women’s soccer team is looking forward to spending quite a bit of time at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field for a five-match homestand.
The Aggies (2-3-0) are coming off a weekend spent in California, where they triumphed over Cal State Fullerton 1-0 but fell in the bay area to UC Santa Barbara also 1-0.
Grace McGuire, sophomore goalkeeper, notched her second shutout of the year as junior forward Bailee Hammond provided the offense over the weekend with scoring the only goal against Cal State Fullerton.
Utah State will host Gonzaga Friday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs sit 3-1-1, most recently handing it to Portland State 5-2. The match will be a tough test for the Aggies who have a 2-3 overall record this season and have been shut out twice. Last season, though, the match against the Bulldogs resulted in a 1-1 tie in 2OT.
To close out the weekend, the Aggies will welcome in Sam Houston State. The Bearkats, who have been outscored this year 27-3, have yet to post a W in their six matches. During their last two matches against Texas and Rice University, Sam Houston State was shutout in both competitions and allowed seven goals, followed by five (Texas and Rice respectively).
The Aggies will have their hands full against Gonzaga, but should be able to find an offensive groove against Sam Houston State.
