Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding recap
For some reason the royal family of the United Kingdom fascinates me.
The royal society is something out of a storybook and being a princess was every little girl’s dream. I think it is so amazing that it still happens today. So, of course I was watching the royal wedding.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s love story is quite an interesting one. It all started with a blind date. Now she’s becoming a princess. Markle is breaking tradition in many ways because she is an American, biracial and already divorced. Harry is non-traditional in some ways as well. He used to be a wild party-boy, but today he settled down and finally got married.
On both ends, this entire affair was set to be fabulous, and it was. It was a royal day full of fancy hats and impressive guests.
The wedding required guests to be in their seats before the bride arrived so many arrived early. No one wants to be late to a royal wedding — that would be the ultimate fail. There were many celebrities and A-listers who made appearances at this wedding, more than usual because Markle is an American actress.
Oprah Winfrey was one of the first guests to step into St. George’s church. Oprah seems like a great choice for a royal wedding guest, she’s a great lady. The only concern for Oprah today was her sunglasses. Sunglasses are not supposed to be worn at all in the church, but Winfrey couldn’t seem to take them off. Did Oprah have a case of pink eye or was the sun just too bright? We may never know, but we can only hope the glasses came off before the queen arrived.
George and Amal Clooney were also in attendance. Amal has become a close friend of Markle’s since she has moved to the UK. Amal wore a bright yellow dress with a matching hat. She got my vote for best fancy outfit of the day.
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian were invited to the big day as well. Williams has been a long time friend of Markle. Several times a Wimbledon champion, Williams sported a much different look today than her usual tennis attire. Williams wore a pastel pink dress with a matching fascinator.
Other notable guests of the day included Idris Elba, the Middleton family, David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John, James Corden and fellow castmates from Markle’s TV series, “Suits.”
One of the most anticipated moments of the wedding was finally seeing what Markle’s wedding dress looked like. It did not disappoint. Markle wore a Givenchy gown. It was modern, sleek and simple. It was a dress made almost for a regular person and not a princess, which says something about Markle’s style. I believe this helped make a statement like, “I’m a princess of the people.” I liked that.
Markle shined in this dress. Her simple elegance is what made her stand out. Markle also continued the tradition of wearing a tiara, which added to the royal look. Harry wore a British military uniform. He looked proper and distinguished.
The ceremony was one that was unique from previous royal weddings. There were many personal touches added to Markle and Harry’s special day, like the black gospel choir and the young black cellist, that made it seem different and more inclusive than previous royal weddings.
Of course there were many adorable moments between Markle and Harry during the ceremony. You could see the love between them by the way they looked at each other.
Once the ceremony was over Harry and Markle walked out the steps of the church and kissed in public for the first time as husband and wife — another fairytale moment.
The fairytale continued with the prince and princess riding in a horse drawn carriage through the streets of Windsor. People had lined the streets just to catch a glimpse of the new princess. The new couple then attended a lunch hosted by the queen herself and, later that night, a reception hosted by Prince Charles.
The world will have to wait another 20 to 30 years for another royal wedding. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will now be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. With this new title, they ring in a new era of the royal family. It was a wedding of many firsts, and we can only expect more groundbreaking moments to come from this young royal couple as the new faces of the royal family.
