Productive First Day for Men’s Tennis

All Utah State men’s tennis players won at least one match at the University of Utah Intercollegiates tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Thursday.

“We did pretty good,” co-interim head coach Lukas Bouton said. “It was the first day I’ve seen a lot of these guys play. I was pretty impressed.”

The Aggies were led by senior Sven Poslusny. Poslusny earned a place in Friday’s quarterfinals with a three set first round victory over BYU’s Travis Fillmore (6-1, 4-6, 6-2), followed by a win over teammate sophomore Curran Wearmouth (6-2, 6-3).

Junior Matt Thatcher was the third Aggie to win his first round match (6-2, 6-0) before bowing in the second to John Pearce of BYU 6-0, 6-1.

Junior Brandon Nielson, sophomore Matt Sweet, freshman Zeno Kastelic and junior Fredrik Peterson all won their first round consolation matches after losing in the first round of the main draw.

“In a long day like this, they managed to keep their energy up pretty good,” Bouton said. “Overall it was a good day.”

It was Bouton’s first tournament with the team as coach after Christian Wright was let go Tuesday. Bouton was formerly an assistant with the Aggies three years ago, and likes the improvement of the team.

“I was definitely pleased with the level where we’re at,” Bouton said. “They just have to do it now for the season.”
