QUICK PICKS: Warming up the body and soul

Joseph Dougherty

It’s cold, and I mean cold. I’m still known in select circles as “California Boy.” So maybe my tolerance for frigid weather is just a tad lower than the rest of you people of the ice. Anyway, one of the best ways to thaw out the winter freeze is in the various hot chocolate-serving establishments in Logan. Gas stations provide hot chocolate cheaper and hotter than restaurants, so exercise caution when drinking. Please don’t drive with a boiling cup of hot chocolate between your legs – use the cup holders.

4. The Hub $.70 for a 12-ounce cup The closest hot chocolate during the freezing walk on the way to your classes, The Hub’s version will warm you up. After a few minutes, we measured the drink to be a steamy 150 degrees – too hot to drink, but nice for a slow sip. Once cooler, it goes down smoothly, but the last swallow seemed a bit powdery. It’s perfect for campus and people-watching, but no whipped cream is available. Add your choice of vanilla or raspberry syrup. Grade: 2 1/2

3. Einstein Bros. Bagels 130 E. 400 North$1.49 for a 16-ounce cup A nice, tall cup of hot chocolate will help you pass the time in this 400 North establishment. However, 16 ounces may be a bit too much to drink for people who aren’t exceptionally fond of the hot stuff. Topped with Robinson’s Light Cream, Einstein’s chocolate can also be enhanced with your choice of cinnamon or chocolate powder. The chocolate had a smooth, full taste and once it cooled from its torrid 165 degrees was quite enjoyable. Grade: 3 1/2

1. (tie) 7-11 $.89 for a 12-ounce cup The surprise of the testing, 7-11’s hot chocolate is one of the best deals for your money. Different size cups are available, as well as French vanilla, Irish cream, cinnamon hazelnut or chocolate cream-flavored creamers. I added Irish cream to my chocolate and was impressed with its rich flavor. Just let it cool down from it’s 170-degree pedestal. Grade: 4

1. (tie) Village Inn 1633 N. Main St.$1.29 for an 8-ounce mug When you really want to feel at home, Village Inn’s chocolate comes in a taller mug than other sit-down restaurants. Meadow Gold Light Whipping Cream sits hunched over the top of the mug. Village Inn keeps its chocolate at a drinkable 105 to 115 degrees, perfect for being able to jump right in and enjoy its warmth without burning your tongue off. Grade: 4
