Recyclemania hits USU
USU is participating in RecycleMania, a competition involving campuses and their communities throughout the U.S., Canada and India.
Nat Frazer, dean of the College of Natural Resources, said, “We are here to promote recycling on campus.”
According to the program’s Web site, the competition lasts 10 weeks, starting Jan. 18 and ending March 28. The first two weeks were considered trial weeks and won’t count toward the final results.
This year, 514 schools have joined in the mania, which is split in two divisions: competitive and benchmark. Out of these schools, 326 are participating in the competitive division alongside USU.
Utah State is one of four universities from Utah participating this year, all of which are also in the competitive division, according to the Web site. Brigham Young University, University of Utah and Southern Utah University are the other Utah competitors.
The USU Recycling Center Web site states, “As a final note, BYU will be competing again this year. We at least have to beat them.”
As of Feb. 7, in the category of Grand Champion, USU was ranked 118th with a 21.53 percent cumulative recycling rate. BYU was ranked 70th with 30.88 percent and California State University – San Marcos was in first place with 82.32 percent. SUU and U of U were not listed in the top 195.
