Respect on Campus

andreaseeley@comcast.net

Dear Editor,

I was recently with my children enjoying the beauty of the USU campus. We noticed members of some fraternities running down Old Main hill as part of their Rush week activities. As we finished our walk up the hill, I was appalled to hear the participants chanting a loud, and very obscene “story” while they marched back up the hill. I am not talking about a few swear words in a private conversation. This was highly offensive.

I understand that no one can monitor every utterance on campus, nor should they. However, when a group holds an event on campus, the members must remember that they are representing not only their organization, but also USU. Their actions influence the image visitors have of the organization and the university. I believe any university-affiliated organization holding such activities has an obligation to show respect for the university and others on campus.

We, as alumni and students, are the greatest representatives for USU and the affiliated programs. We must use that influence wisely by showing our respect for this great institution.
