Rodeo competes at home

Bareback rider Derik Page and calf roper Shane King placed in the top six at the rodeo hosted by the USU Rodeo Club at the Logan City Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday.

The team from Weber State won four events: barrel racing, breakaway roping, goat tying and saddle bronc riding. Idaho State had two winners in bareback bronc riding and steer wrestling.

Utah Valley State College had two winners in team roping and calf roping. The College of Southern Idaho won one event – bull riding.

“There was very little community and university support,” Rodeo Club adviser Jeff Hall said. “It was the worst attendance in the nine years I have been in charge.”

Hall said the weather played a little bit of a part and the home football game was also a factor, but he said he was more disappointed in the hockey team scheduling a home game the same night as the rodeo.

As for the rodeo itself, the stock was provided by Slash T Rodeo, a Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association-approved stock supplier, out of Gooding, Idaho.

“The stock bucked good,” Hall said. “I’m pretty particular that we have good stock. It’s important so we have a true test of athleticism and not just a draw for the easier stock.”

Some of the stock was used in the Dodge National Rodeo, so Hall said he was pleased with the quality.

There will be two more rodeos this fall with the club traveling to Southern Utah University this weekend and then to Idaho State the following weekend.

There will be six rodeos in the spring before nationals are held in June in Casper, Wyo.
