Salt Lake folk artists to perform at USU
Utah folk musician Kate MacLeod will bring her guitar, fiddle and harmonica to play some bluegrass, Celtic and folk music along with her band The Pancakes this Saturday night at the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium.
The performance will be the first in 2005 of the Bridger Folk Music Society concert series.
“She has a sound that is all her own,” said Nora Zambreno, who is a Bridger Folk Music Society member and helps organize the concerts.
Zambreno saw MacLeod a few years ago at a show in Ogden and described her music as “uniquely Americana.”
MacLeod’s background includes experience in classical, traditional American, bluegrass and Celtic music.
She has been known in the Salt Lake City folk music scene since the mid ’90s and was voted by the Salt Lake City Weekly’s Reader’s Poll as the best lyricist in ’95, best bluegrass artist in ’97, best fiddler in ’98, best solo act in ’00 and more.
MacLeod has also been selected for the Utah Arts Council Performing Artists Roster for the fourth time since ’99.
“[MacLeod] really connects with her audience,” Zambreno said.
With the Pancakes, MacLeod will play lead hollow body electric guitar in addition to her fiddle and harmonica.
The band includes Mark Hazel on backup vocals and guitar, Barry Carter on bass guitar and Cliff Smith on percussion.
MacLeod and Pancakes will be releasing their CD, “Breakfast,” on Waterburg Records, in March but the album will be for sale in advance at the concert Saturday night.
The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $12 for students and in advance and $14 for all others at the door.
Tickets for the performance can be purchased at Maya’s Corner, Sunrise Cyclery, Import Auto and the Utah State University Spectrum and Taggart Student Center ticket outlets.
The Bridger Folk Music Society is an all-volunteer non-profit organization aimed at bringing folk musicians to Cache Valley.
More information on the society and dates of upcoming shows can be found on its Web site at www.bridgerfolk.org.
