Sam Hurtado band performs at Whysound for the first time ever

This Friday, Sam Hurtado’s band “Hurtado” made way from Salt Lake to WhySound to show the people of Logan who they really are.

Identifying as an indie rock band, the four musicians are excited to get on stage and set themselves apart from this general genre.

The band creates elements of belonging and vulnerability in their shows by bringing things with them that feel close to home.

The band often brings lamps on stage- and will be bringing a TV that Hurtado found on the side of the road with them this weekend.

The rescue TV now sits in Hurtado’s living room and is usually playing Pokemon, which is exactly what the audience can expect to see on Friday.

“It’s an intimate kind of experience, like you’re in my house,” Hurtado said.

Hurtado’s pull toward Pokemon is representative of his personality, which is something he wants to share with the audience to prove he’s not acting like something he’s not. The ambiance to the performance also shares the nature of their music.

The band has only been together since December, but the four boys are life-long friends according to Hurtado.

Will Washburn, guitarist and Freshman at USU, has been playing music with Hurtado since as long as he can remember.

“Our dads were in a band together in college, and so we’ve just kind of been playing music together and hanging out for most of our lives,” Washburn said.

“We found an article about his band on the Statesman, so it feels very full circle for us. It’s very exciting,” Hurtado said.

Not only did Wahburn’s dad have a passion for music, but growing up his family had a bluegrass band and would perform locally. After playing guitar for 13 years, he realized his style has stayed heavily bluegrass inspired. This wide range of musical influence helps create a unique sound for the indie band.

Washburn is excited to finally play locally after making the commute to Salt Lake City for shows and band practice.

“I can finally have my friends come to a show,” Washburn said, “I’m super excited for it.”

The three bands in the lineup have never all performed together, and Hurtado said he is excited to play with new people and give the audience something new.

On April 7, Hurtado will be releasing a song for the first time ever, available on all platforms.  It’s a new song called “Energizer Bunny.”

“It’s just the type of song I would put on in a dark room and just focus on the music,” Washburn said, “The kind of thing you might want to do with the dark side of the moon, just listen to listen.”

Not only will the band be playing their new song to the show, but they will also be releasing new merchandise, including t-shirts designed by a friend of the band.
