Season winding down for lacrosse clubs

The men’s lacrosse club will play their final regular season game against Boise State University Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tower Field.

The Aggies come into the game with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-1 division record. Boise State comes into Saturday’s game with the best record in Division II at 6-2 overall, with a perfect 4-0 record in the division.

Utah State’s only division loss of the season came at the hands of the Broncos earlier in the year in a game played at Boise, Idaho.

Team president Paul Larkin expects Saturday to be different.

“Playing on our home field, in front of all of our fans, having all of our players here, it will definitely be different,” Larkin said.

Larkin said Boise State is a “physical” team that will take any shot they are given.

“Because they’re so physical, we have to keep our heads,” Larkin said. “Sometimes in a game like that you tend to make dumb mistakes.”

USU has already clinched a playoff berth, but this game still has implications for next week’s tournament. Larkin said they will receive a higher seed going into the tournament with a win this weekend.

In addition to that, a win on Saturday would be a confidence booster playing against the top ranked team in the division.

“We’re excited,” Larkin said. “Games against them are always close; it’s always within one or two goals.”

Larkin also said that the team hopes for a big crowd at the game.

“We’re going to have hot dogs for free; we really want people to be able to have a good time and show them what Utah State lacrosse is all about,” he said.

Also, in an effort to have fun and inform fans about the game, the team will allow fans to take shots on goalies Ben Cole and Jake Morrison after the game.

The women’s lacrosse team will also be in action on Saturday. They will travel to the University of Utah to play in a tournament against all of the major Utah teams (BYU, Weber State and the University of Utah), as well as four teams from Colorado (two University of Colorado teams, Air Force and the University of Northern Colorado).

Team president Michelle Taggart said the players are looking forward to facing some new competition.

“I know that if we play well we can play with any of the Utah teams, but it’s hard to know with the Colorado teams,” Taggart said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

The Aggies first game will be at 8 a.m. and the team will play two games after that at different times depending on if they win.

This will not be the last game for the Aggie women. They have one more home game to be played April 27.

“We’re really excited for Saturday,” Taggart said. “It will be a good day for lacrosse, and we’re just going to go out there and play our hearts out.”
