Seatbelts prevent student injuries

Andrea Edmunds

A three-car accident at 800 East 900 North left behind broken class, one rolled vehicle and several shaken individuals, yet no one was injured Friday afternoon.

“Everybody walked away. Everybody had seatbelts on and it saved them from injury,” said Logan City Police Sgt. Tyson Budge. “They’ll all be sore tomorrow, but it saved them a trip to the hospital.”

Budge said a car was turning left off 800 East on to 900 North when it was struck by another car traveling south on 800 East.

Both cars hit a third vehicle waiting at the stop sign on 900 North “just minding its own business,” Budge said.

He said the accident, in which he believed all the vehicles involved were driven by students, was a good lesson on wearing seatbelts. Sometimes, he said, with 10-miles-per-hour rear end crashes, everybody has to go to the hospital because they aren’t wearing their seatbelts.

“The bounce off the windshield and get a concussion,” he said.

“Whereas these guys probably had – between the two speeds – they were probably going 50 miles an hour on impact and everybody walks away. So seatbelts are a big deal.”
