Shake that Cake

Isaac and Bethany Dixon, Utah State University students, focus on four core values while running their new local business, Shake that Cake.

“Number one is customer interaction how we make them feelnumber two is efficiency, third is taste or consistency and fourth is aesthetic,” Isaac said.

Isaac is from Pocatello, Idaho and is studying international business and economics. His wife, Bethany, is a Cache Valley native from Mendon who is studying international studies.

While the Dixons were working at their previous warehouse job this year, Bethany came up with an idea for a business. With the help of her grandfather, they built a flatbed trailer they could run their business out of.

In September, the Dixons opened Shake that Cake, selling what they refer to as cake shakes.

The idea for the cake shakes came from a job Bethany previously had at a cupcake shop. One of their lesser-known menu items were cupcake shakes.

“We use our little cups we have and we put a couple of scoops of ice cream in and the cubes of cake, which are also in the freezer, and a couple more scoops of ice cream,” Bethany said. “Then we blend it so there’s still some chunks of cake in there but it’s a super thick milkshake that you have to use a spoon with.”

The cake shakes come in three flavors, which are rich chocolate, strawberry shortcake or pumpkin spice. They can be made either milkshake or parfait style.

The couple decided they needed to make a temporary change for the winter season, and in November, switched the trailer from Shake that Cake to Un Cocoa Loco.

Un Cocoa Loco sells hot cocoa bombs for the duration of the winter season. When the weather warms up, the trailer transforms back to Shake that Cake.

“There are these spheres of chocolate. You drop it in hot milk or hot water. And then the sphere melts and then the cocoa mix inside gets mixed in at that same time. So it’s really fun,” Bethany said.

There are four different flavors of the hot cocoa bombs, which are European (dark chocolate), North Pole (peppermint), Mexican (cinnamon spice) and American (milk chocolate).

The hot cocoa bombs will be served on top of a cup of hot water, allowing the customers to have the experience of dropping it in and watching it melt.

Un Cocoa Loco also serves caramel apple donuts.

“I think that the most important thing is that we want to make it an opportunity for people to connect and have something fun to do,” Isaac said.

The trailer is located on Main Street in Logan at 2271 North. It is open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Dixons offer a 10% discount to USU students who show their student ID when they order.
