Shooting Woes Doom Aggies in Laramie
The Utah State Women’s basketball team took to the road last night for a Mountain West Conference matchup with the Wyoming Cowgirls.
Wyoming entered the game coming off a five-game winning streak while USU was trying to snap out of a five-game losing streak.
The game was close through the entirety of the first half thanks to eight points from USU junior forward Hailey Bassett. Wyoming used a balanced scoring attack to take the halftime lead 19-18.
In a third quarter that only had four total field goals made (two by each team), the Cowgirls were able to gain some distance on the Aggies thanks to solid shooting at the charity stripe. Wyoming shot 9-10 on free throws in the quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Aggies were hoping their shooting woes would be halted but were just unable to get shots to fall. They wound up shooting 0-8 from beyond the arc and only 32% from the field.
“It’s not that we died, but we couldn’t score and we fouled a lot,” USU head coach Jerry Finkbeiner said.
Wyoming’s plus 15 at the free throw line was definitely the difference maker in this one as they were able to run away with things, winning 53-35.
The Aggies will face off with Air Force on February 16th as they look to regain some momentum in the tough Mountain West Conference.
