Short-handed lacrosse keeps Weber in check
The USU women’s lacrosse team improved their record and tallied another win as they defeated Weber State’s lacrosse team 8-4 on Saturday in Ogden.
Despite having a team almost half the size of Weber’s and lacking enough players to play the game with any substitutions, the Utah State women dominated against the Wild Cats.
Led by Aggie Julie Ford’s four goals, and Diana Ford’s and Kelsy Schneiter’s two goals each, the Ags took an early lead and made Weber play catch-up for the rest of the game.
The Ag’s early lead came from a goal by Julie Ford about halfway into the first half. But Weber answered on the next play by turning up its offense and running all the way to the goal and scoring.
The Aggies weren’t about to let that happen again. They were able to tighten up on defense and didn’t let WSU score again until late in the second half.
Before the first half was over Ford had another goal on a cut across the middle of the field. Schneiter followed with another quick point to end the half with the Ags up 3-1.
If Weber State had been planning on coming out strong in the second half and making a comeback, Schneiter ended those dreams as she ran all the way down the field nearly unhindered and scored easily on the first play of the half and put the Ags up 4-1.
After Schneiter’s goal, the Wild Cats turned up their intensity. Despite Aggie goalie Katie Grow’s efforts, the defense loosened up slightly and got sloppy.
Weber was able find the holes for two more goals and for the first – and last – time in the game the Wild Cats were within one.
USU called a key time-out to give its team some rest with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game. The Ags came out re-energized and Diana Ford jump-started the Aggie offense again with a goal off a penalty call. The defense turned it up as well and didn’t let WSU see the back of the net again the rest of the game.
Two more goals from Julie Ford in the final 10 minutes of the game, and a goal from Diana Ford in the final seconds of the game, gave the Aggies their second win in two weeks.
The Aggie women will next face Tribal West Saturday April 10.
