Silcock And Hirschi Win Event Titles To Lead Utah State’s Track And Field Team At Twilight Meet
Utah State track and field senior men’s high jumper Clint Silcock and freshman women’s sprinter Kylie Hirschi each won their event on Wednesday to lead the USU men and women to respective second and third-place finishes at the Twilight Invitational at Clarence F. Robison Track in Provo, Utah. This meet was intended as one last chance for athletes to tune up their skills in preparation for their respective conference meets.
Silcock cleared the bar in the high jump with his season-best mark of 2.19m (7-02.25), which also stands as the Western Athletic Conference season-best jump in the event. Hirschi won the 400m hurdles for the fourth time in the last five meets as she crossed the finish line with a time of 1:00.96 just ahead of seniors Heidi Peterson in second (1:01.55) and Camille Fehlberg in fifth (1:02.98).
The Aggies placed athletes in the top five in 21 other events on the day, with multiple personal-best marks as well as several Utah State school history top 10 rankings.
For the women, senior Ashlee Cannon took third in the 100m hurdles (13.85) and fifth in the 100m (12.15) while fellow senior Alexis Meyer finished third in the 800m (2:15.59). Freshman Candace Moyes and junior Rachelle St. Jeor took home third-place honors in the triple jump and pole vault with personal-best marks of 11.01m (36-01.50) and 3.80m (12-05.50), respectively. The Utah State women’s 4x100m relay team ended up in second-place with a time of 46.85.
USU’s men had four athletes take second including seniors James Allred in the 800m (1:52.14) and Eric Larson in the mile (4:09.11) along with freshman AJ Boully in the 110m hurdles (14.84) and sophomore Kenny Hamlett in the triple jump with a leap of 14.90m (48-10.50). Hamlett’s mark put him in the school record books ranking at No. 4, less than eight inches from Jessie Jefferson’s No. 3 mark of 14.92m set in 1968.
Joining Boully in the top five in the 110m hurdles were freshman Jake Peterson and sophomore Jordan McMurray taking third (15.02) and fifth (15.46), respectively. Peterson also finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.44. In the 3000m steeplechase, freshman David Cluff placed third with a 10:11.10 time while Jeff Taylor was fourth finishing with a 10:19.05.
Other Aggie men in the top five included freshman Mikey Payne taking fourth in the 100m (10.72) as senior Alex DuPlessis threw a season-best mark in the javelin of 53.13m (174-03.75), collecting fourth-place. Sophomore Kendale Hamlett rounded out the top five as he received a fifth-place accolade in the long jump with his second-best jump of the season at 6.47m (21-02.75).
Utah State will prepare for the 2011 WAC Outdoor Championships that will be held in Honolulu on May 10-13. The Aggie men are back-to-back defending champions, winning the 2010 and 2009 titles, as well as the 2007 crown. The USU women will be looking for their first outdoor championship since the 1998-99 Big West title, finishing fourth at last season’s WAC Championships, the third-straight season in fourth after finishing fifth in 2007 and third in 2006.
