Soccer’s last second score to beat CSU

Utah State soccer (5-6-1, 2-1 MW) beat Colorado State with a 90th minute goal from senior defender Kylie Olsen in its first conference home game of the season.

Olsen achieved the first goal of her career after 65 games with the Aggies. Scoring with less than a minute left in the match, the game ended 1-0.

Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Richins passed it downfield to Olsen who struck the top right corner of the net past CSU’s keeper from 20 yards away.

The Aggies recorded 15 shots compared to Colorado State’s five. Nine different Aggies took shots in the match including Junior forward Tenzi Knowles, junior defender Addy Symonds-Weichers and senior midfielder London Miller-Smith.

Colorado had nine total saves while USU had two. Graduate keeper Diera Walton played all 90 minutes. This was the 24th clean sheet in her career and recently became USU’s all-time career shutout leader.

Both offense and defense fought to hold off the Rams for the duration of the game. A benefit to the Aggies, CSU played with 10 players for the entire second half after Live Stutzman received a red card for unsporting behavior, shortly followed by a yellow in the 31st minute.

“It was a great game. Colorado State is a very good, well-coached team,” head coach Manny Martins said. “They went a player down for some of the first half and all of the second half, and it was difficult because they played with a big spirit. They were well-coached and well-organized, and we had to really work for it, but in the end, the resilience of our team and our quality and composure showed.”

Utah State’s next matchup is at home against Wyoming on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m
