Warren Miller film premiere goes digital this year

Warren Miller films have been an annual tradition for snow sport enthusiasts since 1950. With COVID-19 restrictions limiting large gatherings, though, the film festival is going virtual this year.

This year’s film, “Future Retro,” focuses on 19 athletes in locations like Switzerland, Iceland, Antarctica and Alaska. From young skiers Lexi duPont and Amie Engerbretson to legendary skier Scot Schmidt, the film explores skiing and snowboarding of the past, present and future.

Gary Nate, the festival organizer for Logan, has been working and filming for Warren Miller Entertainment for decades.

“The truth is, I would have paid them to film, it was so fun,” Nate said.

Nate has had opportunities to film everywhere from Australia to Chile. He hasn’t seen this year’s film yet, but has seen a few excerpts. He’s especially excited for a section with the Egan brothers and Scot Schmidt, all famous extreme skiers.

“The one that I like the best is Big Sky, Montana, because I’ve filmed up there a lot of times,” Nate said. “The Big Sky sequence is going to be fantastic.”

While the premiere will be very different this year, organizers still hope to provide the excitement and tradition of a Warren Film festival.

“Hopefully the convenience and accessibility of the virtual experience will reach a new and wider audience, who may not have been able to attend a live show for geographical or other reasons,” said 20-year Warren Miller filmmaker and producer Josh Haskins. “And of course we’re excited to provide the event atmosphere virtually to our dedicated longtime fans. They will just need to be their own bartenders during the show.”

The film premiere for the Mountain and Central regions begins on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m., beginning with a red carpet pre-show hosted by Jonny Moseley, Olympic skier and longtime Warren Miller narrator. Tickets can be purchased at this link. A streaming pass costs $30 and provides 48-hour access to the film.

Four people per ticket will be entered to win skiing equipment and given access to exclusive coupons and offers. Information can also be found at http://usustatesman.com/warrenmiller/.
