STAB Comedy Night is a laughing good time

Laughs echoed from the Taggart Student Center Ballroom Feb. 17 as the stage was taken over by two comedians.

The Student Activities Board’s comedy night started with Ricky Hacking, former Mr. USU, explaining that he was a “chubby, sweaty kid” growing up. Hacking kept the laughs coming with references to the “Care-Bear Stare” and being silent in restroom stalls.

The night then continued with the featured guest Ben Gleib. He started with a video of “American Idol” contestants thinking he’s a news reporter.

“He’s really original, really different from other comedians,” Mason Livingston, a freshman studying generals, said.

Gleib also said there are some things he wouldn’t do for a Klondike Bar and there are wrong ways to eat Reeses.

“It would suck to go deaf,” Gleib said as his departing thought, “but it would really suck if you got an annoying song stuck in your head right before.”

This was the “big hurrah show” according to Gleib, being his 12th and last show in a three week tour. He performed at nine colleges and three night clubs in Salt Lake City before heading home.

Gleib, a California native, said in an interview Thursday, “Stand up is like a magic potion. It takes talent, luck, being in the right place at the right time, and hard work.”

He said he discovered his knack for comedy his freshman year in college, but has always had a desire for performing.

“If you have the talent in comedy, that’s all the empowerment you need,” Gleib said.

Gleib said he always thinks of comedy. From this trip alone, he said he has hours of new material displayed on scratch papers.

Performing on the Late-Late Show with Craig Kilborne, he said he considers as one of his career highlights, and has also been named one of Comedy Central’s top 10 upcoming comics.

Gleib said Utah State University was a great place and he enjoyed the forms of advertising used to announce his coming.

“I’ve never had my name spray painted in the snow before,” he said, “To have your name spray painted in the snow in Utah means you’re on your way.”
