Statesman Ad

Merlyn Hall

Dear Editor,

I write because I am very concerned with an ad that you allowed to run in the

Statesman on Monday (January 30). I will not go into great detail of this ad

because I do not want to repeat the kind of things that it contained. I know

that simple references will let you know what I’m talking about (the ad wasn’t

hard to miss.) The ad was slutty.

I know that these kinds of things go on around. I know that if this letter is

printed then others will fire back with whatever excuses because they don’t

like to be told that they are in “sin.” They will undoubtedly cry about

forcing my religion on them, or something like that. However, these reasons

are not why I am writing.

I want to make it clear that I write you because this shows a lack of ethics.

It hurts the University. Is not the Utah Statesman a representation of Utah

State University? Does it not represent to the community, prospective

students, and investors what Utah State has to offer? Shouldn’t we be able to

show the Statesman to anyone, of all ages and backgrounds, and be proud for

what they will see? You need to take care in what goes into the school

newspaper. The income from a distasteful ad will not offset the repercussions

from people visiting the university for various reasons, and then being turned

off because they decided to look at our paper. Everything has a place, and the

statesman is not a place for slut. We need to draw a line, or else I fear what

I’ll see next week.
