Safety for the Fourth

The ultimate celebration of summer fun is the Fourth of July weekend, when the sky is illuminated by colorful pyrotechnics and the air is saturated with the smell of hot dogs. This weekend can be one of the most enjoyable summer experiences and many take the opportunity of a long weekend to visit  family or host a backyard barbecue.

But amidst the glow of the sparklers and infectious patriotism there are troubling predictions for accidents and injuries this holiday weekend. The National Safety Council has issued its highest traffic fatality estimate for a three-day period since 2008 for this Fourth of July weekend, predicting 466 fatalities and 53,600 serious injuries as a direct result of driving accidents.

While the numbers presented by the council are disturbing, they are meant to inspire drivers to defy the statistics and save lives. Here are a couple of driving guidelines we can all follow in order to stay safe and still enjoy this quintessential American holiday.

First off, stay buckled up! The NSC estimates that 181 lives could be saved by putting on a seat belt this holiday weekend. The other rule of thumb  should be to select a designated driver for all excursions involving a car, no matter how short the distance. Since 2010, about 37% of accidents during the Fourth of July weekend have involved alcohol, according to the NSC.

Some of the best times of the summer months are had on the Fourth of July, especially when surrounded by friends and family. Fireworks, as long as they are handled appropriately, can be a beautiful reminder of our country’s history. Remember to light fireworks in clear areas one at a time, and always keep a safe distance.

With all the fun to be had this holiday weekend, why risk any accidents? Enjoy the weekend, Aggies, and stay safe out there!
