String Cheese Incident to perform two nights in Ogden

The String Cheese Incident will play at the Val Browning Center in Ogden today and Saturday at 8 p.m. All ages are welcome.

The band has been described as having a mixed rock, calypso and jazz sound, according to Sally Kent with Madison House Publicity. They resemble the sound of the band Phish.

Kent said they are able to play more than one night in a town because each night is different.

“The songs are never the same twice,” Kent said.

The String Cheese Incident began in 1993 in Crested Butte, Colo. They started to get national attention when they toured with the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

There are five members in the band. Kyle Hollingsworth plays piano, organ and accordion. Michael Kang plays the mandolin and the violin. Keith Moseley plays the electric bass and acoustic bass. Bill Nershi plays the 6-string acoustic guitar. Michael Travis plays the percussion instruments.

Kent said the String Cheese Incident tours all year and plays about 200 shows.

They have one CD out now called “Carnival ’99.” Their next CD is scheduled to be released in May.

“Their new one will be more rock,” Kent said. “It lets them put their long draws into tightly crafted songs.”

The String Cheese Incident is independent and owns its own record label, merchandising, ticket sales and publicity companies.

“This saves fans a lot of money and makes it more of a family feel,” Kent said.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $27 at the door. There are no student discounts. Tickets are available through SCI Ticketing at www.stringcheeseincident.com or by calling (303) 544-5875.
