Structure Fire Causes Approximately $30,000 damage to Lowes Home Improvement store

An early morning fire at the Logan, Utah Lowes Home Improvement store in Logan Utah in the Cache Valley caused an estimated $30,000 in damage and tied up firefighters from eight valley fire agencies for nearly two hours. The fire, which is of a suspicious origin, remains under investigation by the Logan Police Department.

The Logan City Police Department 9-1-1 Dispatch Center dispatched the call at 31 minutes after midnight and the first engine from the Logan City Fire Department arrived on scene four minutes later and reported flames visible over the top of the building. Firefighters found a large stack of wooden pallets on fire next to the north wall of the building. Smoke was also found to be filling the store as the fire attempted to spread to the building’s roof and interior.

Firefighters from North Logan, Smithfield and the Cache County Fire District also responded on the initial dispatch to assist the Logan firefighters. The first engine on scene attacked the fire on the exterior of the building, while other responders reported to the roof and the building’s interior to stop the fire’s extension.

After controlling the fire, fire personnel ventilated the store to remove a large build up of interior smoke and moved many large rolls of carpet padding away from the wall that was exposed to fire to insure the fire was completely out.

While firefighters were still fighting the fire at Lowes, another dumpster fire, also near a structure, was reported less than a half a mile from the Lowes store. Officials who investigated the second fire concluded it was not suspicious and was most likely the result of accidental causes.

A total of eight pumpers, two aerial ladder trucks, an ambulance and about 50 firefighters responded from throughout the valley. Personnel and apparatus from Wellsville, Hyrum, Mendon, and Newton also responded in addition to those from cities immediately adjacent to Logan.

The fire resources from throughout the Cache Valley that responded to the Lowes fire were in addition to approximately eight county and city fire units and about 30 personnel that were already working a large grass fire within Cache County along Ant Flat Road between Hardware Ranch and the Monte Cristo Pass.
