Students favor certain stores for fashion
Most college students in Logan have limited funds to spend on shopping, whether for food, personal hygiene needs or clothing.
“I buy groceries once a month,” said Jenè Yochim, a junior at Utah State University. She usually shops at Macey’s.
“Macey’s is my place,” Yochim said. She shops for toothpaste and other household needs at Wal-Mart.
Dale Lentz, a junior at USU, spends $10 per week on food.
“All I usually get is cereal, milk, bread and lunch meat,” Lentz said. “The other day I got some Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup. But that was about all I bought that week.”
Camille Gooch, a junior, shops for groceries about once every two weeks at Lee’s. She usually doesn’t spend very much money.
Aside from the student’s hygiene need, clothing is second on the list of things to buy.
Shopping for clothing in Logan is limited to stores in the mall, Wal- Mart, Fred Meyers, ShopKo, K-mart, specialty stores and Deseret Industries.
More women shop at Maurice’s than men. On average, half of their customers are college students and spend around $40 or $50, said Kayla McKinley, manager of Maurice’s.
“Mainly college students shop here because there are not a lot of options in the area,” McKinley said. “But I think that we do have some trendier clothes, and it’s kind of a more hip place than others in the valley.”
“I think that there is still a lot of room for growth in Cache Valley,” McKinley said.
“There are still not a lot of options and places to shop. You find that everybody is wearing the same clothes, because there’s not a lot to choose from. They could bring in a bigger variety of clothing stores,” McKinley said.
Gooch almost never shops for clothes in Cache Valley. Lee’s or Wal-Mart are two places she shops the most.
“Cache Valley needs more variety,” Gooch said.
“When I go home there are a lot more stores and not much selection,” Gooch said.
Lentz rarely buys clothing in Cache Valley. His favorite stores are Wal-Mart and Deseret Industries.
“Mostly, I’m the biggest fan of filling out the credit card applications and getting the free shirts from the University,” Lentz said. “I don’t ever buy clothes anywhere. Seriously, I’ve never bought pants from stores like The Buckle or JC Penney’s.”
