‘Suessical’ coming next week

We will not see it in the rain; we will not see it on a plane. We will not see it in a box; we will not see it with a fox. But at the Eccles it will be; a night of Seuss for you and me.

Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, the national touring company of the musical comedy “Seussical” will be in town for two performances Oct. 20 at the Ellen Eccles Theatre. The shows will start at 4 and 8 p.m.

“This production is for the kid in all of us,” said Lisette Miles, executive director of Cache Valley Center for the Arts. “There’s a great story set to great music and all ages will find something to love about this show.”

Some of Seuss’s best-loved characters appear in the show including such favorites as Horton the Elephant, Mazzie LaBird, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos down in Whoville, the Grinch, Yertle the Turtle and the Cat in the Hat.

Like all Seuss books, the show aims to teach lessons about friendship, acceptance and love. When Horton the Elephant discovers an entire world of people living on a speck of dust, it is up to him to keep them safe from the other unbelieving animals in the Jungle of Nool.

According to the show’s Web site, www.seussical.com, “Seussical” was conceived by the Tony Award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens (lyrics and book) and Stephen Flaherty (music and book) along with Eric Idle of Monty Python fame. The Grammy-nominated score includes pop, gospel, bleus and R & B. “Seussical” is based on the works of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel).

Seuss wrote more than 50 books, and received the Pulitzer Prize for literature, three Academy Awards, two Peabody Awards and two Emmy Awards in his lifetime. Many of his lovable characters, including Horton the Elephant, the Grinch (Who Stole Christmas), and The Cat in the Hat have been featured in television specials and hit films.

Tickets to the show are $35, $29 and $20, but students can receive a 25 percent discount with a current ID card. For tickets visit the box office at 43 S. Main St. or call 752-0026. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
